Honey and beeswax have been long-cherished in folklore and traditional medicine as potent, natural skin healers. These special hive products are traditionally believed to possess the magic of the sun and flowers, offering protective, nourishing, and regenerative properties to the skin.

The Old English word for honey mead (medu) was deeply tied to the concept of happiness. The term medu-dréam literally meant "mead-joy".

In ancient Britain, bees and honey were so central to life that the British Isles were famously known as the "Honey Isle of Beli" (Ynys Fel Veli). This linked the island to Beli Mawr, a legendary king or sun god. From the mystical "Otherworld" of the Celts to the grand "mead-halls" of the Anglo-Saxons, honey was viewed as a sacred bridge between the mortal and spiritual realms.

For the ancient Celts, honey was a sacred food that came from the divine. Bees were believed to be messengers traveling between our world and the spirit realm. People believed bees seen after a death were the souls of their loved ones. Archaeological finds show honey stored in earthenware pots as far back as 2500 BC, often buried with the dead to nourish them in the afterlife.

Perhaps the most enduring British folklore is the ritual of "telling the bees." Bees were treated as extended family members. If a major event occurred (births, marriages, or deaths), the beekeeper or his "goodwife" was required to gently to get their attention then whisper the news to the hive. Upon a beekeeper's death, the hives were often draped in black cloth. Failing to "tell the bees" was believed to cause the bees to stop producing honey, desert the hive, or die from grief.

This custom was recorded in various 19th-century accounts and literature, including John Greenleaf Whittier's poem "Telling the Bees". It was also referenced in Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
