Lip Balm | Clary Sage & Peppermint

Olea europaea fruit (organic olive) oil, butyrospermum parkii (organic Fair Trade shea) butter, cera alba (local beeswax), theobroma cacao seed butter (organic cocoa butter), tocopherol (vitamin e), mentha piperita (peppermint) oil, salvia sclarea (clary sage) oil, geraniol*, limonene*, linalol*. * Occurs naturally in essential oils.

This lip balm is suitable for all skin types. It is not suitable for vegans due to the inclusion of honey and beeswax. The lip balms come in a fully recyclable cardboard container with a push-up mechanism. The tubes hold 2 - 3 times more product than standard lip balms yet they're still small enough to pop in your pocket.

Mint arrived in Britain on Roman feet. The legions brought it with them, strewing it across feasting tables, and rubbing it into bathhouse floors. Pliny the Elder wrote that its smell alone was enough to "recovereth and refresheth the spirits." When the Romans left, the plant stayed. The Anglo-Saxons knew it as minte - one of the oldest herb-names in the English language - and by the 17th century, Gerard was recording that its smell "rejoyceth the heart of man." Peppermint, that bright hybrid first named in Hertfordshire in 1696, carries all of this forward. 

Today's herbalists and aromatherapists prize peppermint for the same qualities. Its menthol is antimicrobial and cooling, drawing circulation to the surface and soothing whatever it touches. On the lips, it calms, protects, and refreshes, as it always has.

Clary sage the Romans called herba sacra - the sacred herb - and they are thought to have carried it here too. Its name traces through centuries of mouths: from the Latin clarus, through Anglo-Norman into Middle English, softening finally into clary, then clear eye, see bright, Oculus Christi. Medieval healers used it to soothe and calm the skin, to steady the nerves, to clear what was troubled. Something in its nature seems to invite that kind of faith.  Modern practitioners have followed that same instinct. We reach for clary sage in balms and preparations for its ability to calm inflammation, balance and purify the skin, and ease the mind through scent alone.
